Review
It's a season to do cover songs: Joni Mitchell, George Michael started with it and now Rickie Lee Jones follows their lead. This is not a traditional cover song album, however. Jones adds concept to her already childlike voice. Although some songs are better than others, the arrangement of some songs are indeed breathtaking. First, Rickie pays tribute to Steely Dan, covering "Showbiz Kids" with an acoustic rendition, making it better than the original. This move previews the thunderous win of Steely Dan in the Grammys and potentially increases Steely Dan T-shirt sales. The other songs are mostly jazz standards, with "On The Street Where You Live" and "Up a Lazy River" as highlights. Rickie sings with joy here. The arrangement for "Someone to Watch Over Me" and "I Can't Get Started" are kind of weak. Follow the brilliant arrangment in "For No One" and the Ben Folds Five song (featuring Ben Folds the man himself) and you'll know what a good band is. A fabulous effort from RLJ.
