Review
"Melena" is not Giuseppe Tornatore's best movie. It's not even in the ballpark of "Une Pure Formalite" and "Cinema Paradiso." It's sort of an assignament project, where Tornatore's experimenting and finding his new path to glory. As a noble failure, the score of "Malena" by the elderly Ennio Morricone is, on the other hand, nothing short of great. The score is just as beautiful as the story's protagonist, Monica Bellucci. I can only imagine Morricone wrote the music with her face in mind. Needless to say, Morricone's contribution to film music in underestimated. Indeed, though not prolific, he has always produced fantastic score.

This piece reminds me a lot of his previus work, "The Legend of 1900," another piece of cinematic failure but won Morricone a well-deserved Golden Globe award. While Tim Roth's performance is mesmerizing, the score really made the film worthwhile to see at least once. Believe me, the music will make you cry. This piece also reminds me of the works Morricone did for Tornatore less than a decade ago, "Cinema Paradiso." You will find a lot of similarities in them. This is an enjoyable score, and you will enjoy it. Very European, and it should be.
