Review
I've heard Joe Lovano live in Boston's Charle's
Hotel's Regatta bar with my mentor David Bond. Since
then, I've loved Lovano's emotional yet constrained
way of playing. His "Live at Village Vanguard"
double set is a nice warm-up, but I found it to be quite
freeflow and disjuncture. In his new effort, his nonet
delivers a more straight-ahead interpretation of traditional
jazz songs written by Miles Davis, Gershwin, Monk, Billy
Strayhorn, and a very special composer, Tadd Dameron.
Lovano's sax is warm and less innovative, which I like.
And the nonet doesn't produce redundant noise if that's
what you worry about. Overall, a fabulous album. Also,
Blue Note has a reputation of not-so-audiophile recordings.
The recording quality is surprisingly on Blue Note's
strong side. Ending with "Embraceable You"
is a smart choice.
