Review
John
Slate is a Ithaca-based musician who has the sound of
Stan Getz. His sax playing is straight, but no tricks
involved - no weird stuff, just straight-ahead, but
passionate, sax playing. Again, sort of like Stan Getz,
and to an extent Scott Hamilton. I used to listen to
Slate every week when I was at the Regent Lounge. Maybe
that's how I emotionally got involved with his music.
His music brought me life after a week of hard work.
But John White, the pianist, really stands out of his
album. I saw this quartet live once in Stellar's and
John White just knocked my socks off. They did a 15
minute of Miles Davis' "All Blues" and White just went
nuts on his keyboard. An enjoyable album with sentimental
values.
