Review
This
is a truly unique album as the singer's name suggests.
This album is actually produced by a friend of mine,
Jeff Wong, who has particular interests in hi-fi recording
of jazz music. This album is a definitive product of
hi-fi sound and great content. Unique is a great club-bar
singer from the Phillippines. She's not originally a
jazz singer; she doesn't have a voice as soulful Whitney
Houston or Theresa Caprio, but she knows how to use
it efficiently. This is probably her first and last
personal album; but it actually does the Hong Kong music
scene a great service. Of course, besides Unique's unique
voice, the band is one of the biggest reasons why this
is an A album. The band includes Tommy Ho and Eugene
Pao on guitars, Dave Packer on piano and harmonica,
Paul Candelaria on bass, and Anthony Fernandes on drums;
a dream team. In this album, Packer's harmonica replacing
the usual jazz instrument saxophone is a worthy try.
Pao is in top form; even better than the performance
in his own album (I don't know why, musicians always
make this mistake). The only thing I don't like about
this CD is the applause in the beginning and the end
of each song; it's just not intense enough. (You either
have it or you don't; in this case, don't!) But overall,
this CD is superb and will remain history in the Hong
Kong jazz scene.
