Review
Believe it or not, this is the first ever session of
the "MTV Unplugged" series. McCartney started
it, but Clapton made it famous. If Unplugged was Clapton's
best performance, then it is also Paul's. Paul has never
sounded so good in decades. This time, he returns to
pay tribute to the roots of rock n'roll, blues and Bill
Monroe (mistakenly identified as "Matt Monro,"
as someone in the band whispers, "Matt Manro is
dead." Ed's note: Matt is not dead yet.) He also
sings the first song he wrote, "I Lost My Little
Girl," which is an uninspired tennie-bopper song
like a bad Buddy Holly song. He also sings a quite different
version of "SF Bay blues" from EC's. Interesting
to listen. There are also some Beatles favorites like
"Blackbird" and "We Can Work it Out."
The climax of the show is of course Paul's drum solo
on the Bill Withers classic "Ain't No Sunshine."
This is a very nice collection of songs indeed and Paul's
best live work.
