Review
Where has Steely Dan gone after 20 years of absence
in public realm? The answer was revealed in last month's
Grammy, and this well-aged, if not completely forgotten,
group got four of those statues. Normally, we do not
advertise anything that is remotely related to Grammy's
notorious commercialism. But this time, we must admit
this album deserves its awards. Becker and Fagen became
hermits in the last 20 years (since 1980's Aja)
and worked so hard to produce this promising result.
This CD is a sample and taste of the classic Steely
Dan: complex rhythms and harmonic structures, sophisticated
phrasing, funky beats and well thought out musical ideas.
Besides
the overhyped "Cousin Depree," check out "Gaslighting
Abbie" and "Two Against Nature" and you'll
know these white men have got the soul, more soul than
Jennifer Lopez, Puff Daddy and Britney Spears (who are
the Grammy regulars). After all, the Grammy does do
justice! This years' Grammy is not for kids, but for
old rock n'roll fans who have a nose for cool music.
Although this album may not have the impact of Santana's
comeback album Supernatural, but it is enough
to declare itself a spot in rock history.
