Review
One can't listen to Van Morrison just by Greatest Hits
or Very Best of. One must explore Van's musical world
album through album. But where to start? Many critics
say Moondance. Though I agree, I want you to try
this album too. Van takes on a different approach here.
This is the period where he is into a new level of self-realization
and takes on soft jazzy tunes (not unlike the song "Moondance"
itself) which becomes one of van's specialty later in
his musical journey. He blows sax in three different tunes
("Spanish Steps," "Celtic Excavation, "
and "Allow Me") on this album. Van is nowhere
near the best sax player but his playing just shows that
he is all-rounded. And he has sentiments. He's not just
blowing the horn. He has something to say. The whole album
has something to say. Just sit down and listen to the
album under candle light and search for its message, whatever
it is.
