Review
This
movie is directed by Robert Altman and is considered
one of his more noble failures. But the soundtrack is
exceptional, beyond what a typical soundtrack can do
and make you feel. This set of recording was recorded
especially for the movie, largest because of Altmans's
prominence in the industry and his love for jazz. It
features some of my favorite modern jazz musicians:
David "Fathead" Newman, James Zollar, Nicholas
Payton, Ron Carter, Geri Allen, Christian McBride, Russell
Malone, Mark Whitfield and people I don't like a lot
such as Joshua Redman, Don Byron, to name a few. But
the sound is extraordinary. The ambiance is so real
and direct that you think it might be a live event even
though it's only playing on your not-so-good stereo.
This is not real big band music. Don't be fooled! It's
fake big band, but it's better than big band. For those
who think big band is too noisy, this is not. It has
a honky-tonk feel. Jazz can be that grassroot! And jazz
should be that grassroot and available to everybody.
There should be no sign of "Chinese and dogs are
not allowed to listen to jazz!"
