Review
Who says BVSC is dead? It's alive and ever more
experiemental. This brilliant disc, led by Cuba's No.1
contemporary bassist Orlando "Cachaito"
Lopez, demonstrates that weirdness and traditionalism
can co-exist. Adding a funky sound to the amazing Lopez
compositions, Cachaito, quoting both from Cachao and
Ron Carter, blows us away with expert virtuosi.
In
this "weird," experimental form of Cuban music,
Cachaito decides to play funky with a fusion DJ (Dee
Nasty), funk grandfathers (Pee Wee Ellis, Hugh Masekela),
Cuban vocal legend (Ibrahim Ferrer) and a group of talented
musicians. With funk-o-masters like Pee Wee Ellis
and Hugh Masekela sit in as guest performers,
this album plays like a funk album as much as it is
a Cuban album.
Produced
by Nick Gold and recorded by BVSC originator Jerry Boys,
the audiophile sounds of this CD is music to our picky
ears. Cachiato focuses on beats and rhythms, making
sure you move with your bodies while listening. Cachaito
pays tribute to Charles Mingus in "Tambao No.5,"
his wife in "Anais," and Carlos Santana on
"Wahira" (featuring Ibrahim Ferrer on vocals),
and classic funk on "Tumbanga."
The
energy and heart of Cachaito can easily make this the
best disc in year 2001 up to this point.
