Review
A French
legend, Henri Salvador was born in 1917 in Cayenne,
French Guiana. He studied music in Paris and played guitar
with Django Reinhardt on one occasion. It's lovely
to know that a man of such an age can still play with such
grace and is young at heart. This album demonstrates music
doesn't fade with age, but marinate with time. Henri Salvador's
voice is like a nicely aged bottle of wine, so tender, so
smooth, so dreamlike.
Re-released on
Blue Note in 2002, the music here is loungy, Latin, and contains
Bossa Nova groove. The first song "Jazz, Silver Moonlight"
starts off mellow, inducing a Bossa Nova mood, mixed with
impressive bass and drums. The trombone solo is impeccable.
The other highlight is the duet between Salvador and Lisa
Ekdahl, the one and only Swedish jazz diva. "All
I Really Want is Love" is a must-listen, as it features
the predictable yet enjoyable composition by Ekdahl's talented
husband Salvadore Poe.
Also incredible
to hear Henri side-by-side jazz's only harpist Toots Thielemans
and vis-a-vis the one and only Francoise Hardy. Other
songs are hit-or-miss, but the overall tone of the album makes
it one of the best foreign albums in 2002.
