Review
This is truly Pike's peak, when Pike
was obviously at his very best. I was never a vibes fan and
I still am not, but Pike's playing transcends the whole instrument
and dispels the boring myth of vibes music. His first song
"Why Not" is obviously an answer to Miles Davis'
"So What." "Veird Blues" is also a Davis
composition that was pleasant on this album.
The true treasure
of this album is Bill Evans. Bill Evans was never a
swing pianist since he got a lot of influence from classic
music. However, he swings here for the first time and he sounds
like a Wynton Kelly. A surprising turn for Evans and
this is his first outing after Scott LaFaro died. You
can see how this album builds up for the hip and pleasurable
for Bill Evan's Trio 64, a
swinging album.
