Review
Another amazing
effort from the Buena Vista Social Club group! This time,
Ruben Gonzalez, the legendary Cuban pianist delivers his
best performance ever, even better than his debut on Nonesuch
label some three years ago. The one decisive factor to
make this a better album is that there are more vocals
than his last album, mostly contributed by Ibrahim Ferrer
and other great performers. One must recognize that vocals
are essential in traditional Cuban songs. This album defeats
his last somewhat boring attempt and instead replaces
it with a balance between instrumental and vocals. Ruben
plays with happiness and energy in his toppest form. The
sng "Rico vacilon" is particularly playful and
humorous for it was featured as a diarrhea medecine TV
commercial when I grew up as a child in Hong Kong. Brings
me back lots of childhood memories. A great album to remember
and celebrate the talents of one of the best pianists
in the last century.
